FINAL YEAR B.E. CIVIL ENGINEERING

Under the guidance of

Ms. K. AKIL ,M.E. Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Civil Engineering
Hindusthan College of Engineering and
Technology
Perur town is one of the town panchayat in Coimbatore
district.
This town is located at a distance of 10km from the city on
the Siruvani road.
The Noyyal river is flowing on the northern side of the town.
 The present population as per 2011 census is 8800.
The area of the town, as per local body records is 6.40 Sq
Km. The total area of the town is divided into 15 wards.
The famous Sri Patteeswarar temple dates back 6th century
is located in this panchayat and it is one of the important
pilgrim centres in Tamil Nadu. The Festivals celebrated by
this Temple attracts very big crowds of people from all over
India.
Large crowd of Pilgrims visit the temple during annual
car Festival times besides a regular stream all around the
year.
This Temple is also regarded as the place of liberation of
the souls.
Perur temple and mountainous surroundings is also
regarded as Dakshina Kailash from the puranic times.
 Perur and its surroundings, where part of Arai nadu ruled
by Kongu Kings, during periods upto 10th century A.D
This place was ruled by Chola Kings from 10th century
A.D, Pandya Kings in the 12th century and later by Hoysala
Kings vijayanagar kings, mysore kings, Hydrali khan and
Tippu Sulthan till 1792 A.D.
 The British rulers then took over the administration of the
Perur temple.
 Our project is concerned with the design of water
distribution system around Patteeswarar Temple
premises.
 The distribution system involves locating a borewell
from where the water is pumped using a submersible
pump.
 Then the pumped water is taken to a staging overhead
tank.
 The water is then distributed through the network of
pipes and the whole system estimation is done.
The Temple, being a famous pilgrim centre is crowded with
floating population throughout the year.
The river Noyyal which is beside the Temple is in a dried
condition due to lack of seasonal rainfall.
There is a lot of inconvenience for the people who come to the
temple to perform rituals for the dead.
The existing water supply system is not adequate to fulfill all
the needs of the floating population due to following reasons:
•Rainfall is irregular and intermittent with an annual
average of approximately 700 mm.
•The per capita supply will be as low as 15 lpcd during
adverse seasons.
•It is not possible to draw additional quantity from Siruvani
WSS.
•The existing Service Reservoirs constructed under rural
norms which are of low staging heights.
•To collect the following particulars of Perur from the Perur
Town Panchayat.
•The existing water supply system in Perur.
•The population of the Town and the floating population of the
temple.
•To visit the temple premises and the surroundings to conduct a
general survey.
•To visit the temple during special festivals like Thai Pusam,
Maha Shiva Rathri and New Moon days to gain knowledge of
the rituals, the floating population and their needs.
•To determine the potability of the bore water by testing the
water sample for water potability test.
•To gather data about the water supply standards and other
details regarding the design of distribution system from the
TWAD Board.
•To gain knowledge about the important particulars regarding
location and dimensions of the borewell from the details given
by the geologist.
•To decide the dimensions of the borewell from the given data.
•To derive the capacity of the overhead tank from the floating
population data.
•To sketch an AutoCAD diagram of the looped pipe network
and mark the levels, nodes and length of the pipes.
•To calculate the pressures in the pipe network using LOOP
software.
•To calculate the economy of the pipe using ECP software.
•To show the duration of the necessary events to be carried
out before the laying of the distribution system using PERT.
•To estimate the pump, pipe layout and borewell system.

•The distribution system was designed to meet the water
requirements of the floating population of Sri Patteeswarar
Temple and to be economic.
•The data obtained from the Perur Town Panchayat
contained all information like the general particulars,
population and existing water supply system of Perur that
were essential for our project.
•The norms and standards given by the TWAD were useful
in designing an efficient system for Perur.
•The bore well sample was collected and tested for
water potability .
•The water test report proved that the water was
chemically potable.
•The location and dimension of the bore well was
decided from the hydro-geological survey in such a
way that there was sufficient supply of water
throughout the year.
•The designed tank capacity was adequate to meet the
demands of the floating population.
•The layout of the looped water distribution network
sketched using AutoCAD was useful in denoting all
essential data like length, nodes and levels.
•The LOOP software facilitated in the calculation of
pressure in the pipe network.
•The ECP software was useful in the calculation of
economy of the main pipe.
•The PERT gave the duration of necessary works that
had to be carried out before the commencement of the
laying of water distribution system.
