FRACTION
• A fraction is a "part" of a "whole". It is also a ratio
between two integers separated by a solidus (/)
or a vinculum ( __ ). The upper part of a fraction
is called a numerator and the lower part is called
a denominator.

• Give examples
Types of Fractions
• Proper Fractions: The numerator is less than the
denominator .
Examples: 1/3, 3/4, 2/7
• Improper Fractions: The numerator is greater than (or
equal to) the denominator
Examples: 4/3, 11/4, 7/7
• Mixed Fractions: A whole number and proper fraction
together
Examples: 1 1/3, 2 1/4, 16 2/5
Rewriting Mixed Numbers to Improper
Fraction

1. Multiply the whole number part by the fraction's

denominator.
2. Add that to the numerator.
3. Then write the result on top of the denominator.

Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
𝑎 𝑐 𝑎±𝑐
Rule: ± =
𝑏 𝑏 𝑏

• In cases where there are different denominators, you

must first find equivalent fractions with the same
denominator, like this:
1. Find the smallest multiple (LCM) of both numbers.
2. Rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions with the LCM as
the denominator.
Perform the indicated operation.

Multiplication of Fractions
𝑎 𝑐 𝑎𝑐
• Rule: =
𝑏 𝑑 𝑏𝑑

• To multiply fractions, first we simplify the fractions

if they are not in lowest terms. Then we multiply
the numerators of the fractions to get the new
numerator, and multiply the denominators of the
fractions to get the new denominator. Simplify the
resulting fraction if possible.

Division of Fraction
𝑎 𝑐 𝑎 𝑑 𝑎𝑑
• Rule: ÷ = =
𝑏 𝑑 𝑏 𝑐 𝑏𝑐

To divide any number by a fraction:

• Multiply the number by the reciprocal of the fraction.
• Simplify the resulting fraction if possible.
