Cytokinesis uestion
Mitosis
• Process in which one cell becomes two
• Occurs in somatic cells (body cells)
• 4 steps
– Prophase
– Metaphase
– Anaphase
– Telophase
Return to Menu
Interphase
• The cell prepares for mitosis
– Nucleus replicates it’s DNA and centrosomes
• Dark spot in the center of cell
– This spot is the nucleolus

Return to Menu
Prophase
• Chromatin condenses
• Chromosomes become visible
• Nuclear envelope disappears
• Spindles are developing

Return to Menu
Prometaphase
• This is the stage between prophase
and metaphase.
• The breakdown of the nuclear
envelope occurs.
• Proteins attach to centromeres and
create kinetochores.

Return to Menu
Metaphase

• The spindle fibers attach to centromeres.

• The chromosomes align at the center of the
cell.
– A chromosome is a long thread of DNA.

Return to Menu
Anaphase
• Chromatids separate and move
to opposite sides of cell.
• A chromatid is one half of a chromosome.
• At this stage, cytokinesis may begin.

Return to Menu
Telophase
• The nuclear membrane forms
during telophase.
• The chromatids begin to uncoil.
• Spindle fibers, which helped to
align and draw the chromatids,
separate.

Return to Menu
Cytokinesis
• The cytoplasm divides.
• Two identical daughter cells are formed.
What happens after cytokinesis?
• Two identical daughter
cells exist
– Enter interphase
• Re-enter mitosis

Review Question
Which phase of the cell cycle results in the
separation of one cell to form two cells?
Interphase
Anaphase
Cytokinesis
Telophase
Nice Try!
• Interphase is when the cell copies it’s DNA
and prepares for mitosis. It is not the stage of
the cell cycle when the cell divides to form
two new cells.

Nice Try!
• Anaphase is when the chromosomes separate
and move toward opposite ends of the cell.
• Please go back and try again!

Question
GOOD JOB!!!
• The correct answer is cytokinesis!! Cytokinesis
is the process in which the cytoplasm divides
and two daughter cells are formed. The
daughter cells are identical.

Nice Try!
• Telophase is the phase of mitosis in which the
nuclear membrane starts to form.
• Please return to the question slide and try
again.
