region bordering Tibet and Spiti. Some trekking experience is required.

White Water Rafting


The best site for rafting are the rivers Chandrabhaga (Chenab) in Lahaul, the Satluj
near Shimla, the Ravi near Chamba and the Beas near Kullu. Gobind Sagar
near Bilaspur, the Chamera Lake near Dalhousie and at the Manali-Kullu
National Highway are some of the other hot spots for white river rafting in
Himachal Pradesh.

Toy train
• These trains, operating on narrow-gauge tracks - hence the name toy trains - laid
during the British days, link stations in the plains to hill stations and offer a laid
back experience, where passengers can take in the diverse mountain scenery at
leisure. Kalka-Shimla: 107 tunnels, arched bridges and picturesque stations en
routes are the features of the 96-km journey linking the one-time summer capital
of India to the plains of Punjab.
National parks and sanctuaries
The Wildlife Sanctuaries provide a very good opportunity to the visitor to enjoy and experience the
wilderness of the state.

SIMBALBARA SANCTUARY: This sanctuary is located in Paonta Valley of Sirmour


District. This area bears beautiful dense Sal forests with grassy glades. This is probably
the most picturesque area of Shiwaliks. There is a perennial stream in the area.

CHAIL SANCTUARY: Chail is a hill station visited by many tourists.The Deodar and Oak
forests with grasslands around the township are the abode of wildlife. One can see
Sambar, Goral and Cheer Pheasants at Blossom and Jhaja.Visitors are welcome to the
Cheer pheasant breeding centre at both these places. Barking deer and Kalijin in the
forests are sure to meet and greet the visitors at dusk and dawn.

MAHARANA PRATAP SAGAR: This lake sanctuary is a big attraction for migratory ducks
from Siberian region during winter. One can see thousands of ducks in the swamp area
between Shahnahar barrage and Pongdam and the surrounding shallow waters of the

lake.
Special tours during festival seasons
JANUARY-Lohri or Maghi are the main festivals. It traditionally celebrates the last sowing of the Rabi
crops. Community bonfires, folk songs and dancing, mark the festival.

FEBRUARY- Winter Carnival is held in this month. Gochi in the Bhaga Valley is an unusual festival where
the villagers celebrate the birth of male children. Baba Barbhag Singh Mela is held in Una to honour the
sage who was renowned for his magical powers.

MARCH- Holi Festival is a riot of colours and celebration of spring, along with it comes laughter and
vitality. There are exuberant celebrations at Palampur (Kangra) and Sujanpur (Hamirpur).

APRIL- Held on the first Baisakh - the 13th April - Baisakhi is one of Himachal's very important festival.
Rooted in the rural agrarian tradition, it bids final farewell to winter. Numerous village fairs complete
with wrestling, dancing and archery are also held on this day.

JUNE: Shimla's Summer Festival - a memorable event. Shimla also hosts the Red Cross Fair, sport
tournaments, flower shows, a photographs and posters exhibition and a fashion show based on folk
costumes. The Kangra Festival is also held in June at Kangra, At Solan, on the third Sunday of the
month, the Solan Fair honours the goddess Shoolini, the presiding deity of the region.

OCTOBER: Kullu Dussehra - They pay homage to Lord Raghunath while music and colour fill the 'Silver
Valley'. Numerous stalls offer a variety of local wares. This is also the time when the International Folk
Festival is celebrated.
