Brief: A feasibility study into the commissioning, development and installation of a major
piece of contemporary art celebrating the aerospace industry in the North West of England.

Ken Hudson, leader of Preston Council, said the statue could help put Preston on the map like
the Angel of the North, an iconic 66ft-tall artwork close to the A1, did for Gateshead.

Celebration & Festival

Blackpool 'Flying Week' was held at Squires Gate in October 1909, the world's second
international aviation meeting after that held at Rheims in August. In July/August 1910,
the Blackpool 'Flying Carnival' met with even greater success.

Manchester’s Alliott Verdon Roe, was the first British person to fly an all-British aeroplane,

Key Experience: Developed in 2009 the ‘Universala’ public art interpretation strategy for
Wearmouth-Jarrow UNESCO bid to celebrate St Bede and develop connected dual media
and light installations between St Peter’s church, Wearmouth and St Paul’s church in Jarrow.
Solicited Lead Artists are Nayan Kulkarni, Jason Bruges, Amenity Space and Jo Fairfax.

had to adapt a modern passenger jet to accommodate the whims and fancies of a celebrity

Burnley – a networking and temporary public art programme engaging with BDP’s

artists KAPOK developing through R&D, a prototype for ‘urban accupuncture’ and pressure
points via new lighting, sunlight reflectors and sound ‘friggers’ with Aurora lighting contractors
and US sound artist Bill Fontana. Other commissions included SDNA TV video projections and
Charlie Davidson street furniture.
