= aocation: 4520 N Tryon St. Charlotte, NC 28213
= The main reason people go to this mall is to buy
oriental groceries
= There is a Family Dollar, two Asian markets, three
oriental food restaurants, one clothing store, and
a few other small businesses.
= Most running businesses are located on the
outside
= A Vietnamese family purchased this mall that
was once Tryon Mall (Hopkins 1).
| |
= Tryon Mall started in 1965

= ´I watched Tryon Mall being built and the decline

of it, ´ said Charlene Sawyer (Hopkins 1).

= Asian Corner Mall was first Tryon Mall, which

failed. Then Reopened as Asian Corner Mall and
failed again.
|

ë

= The building is disgusting, dirty, and run down

= ´I thought it was so simple, just come in and clean,µ

Mimi Nguyen said. ´I didn·t know about building
standards and all that.´ (Hopkins 1)

= The new owners did not anticipate all that was

required in cleaning up the failing mall, which lead
to the mall failing again.

= Inside the mall is very dark, dreary, and dead

= Most of the stores have closed down

= The restrooms are in terrible conditions

|

ë

= The mall has been through serious weather
damage.
= ´Then, in July 1997, the remnants of Hurricane
Danny tore through Charlotte and flooded the
mall.µ (Hopkins 1)
= The parking lot has pot holes that resemble the
moon
= ´Weeds sprouted in the parking lot cracksµ
(Hopkins 1).
= The atmosphere feels very sketchy and unsafe
ë

= A.C.M. has also had gang activities in its past

= An article in the Charlotte Observer mentioned

that there had been three men who were
assaulted by ten to fifteen gang members at the
Asian Corner Mall on North Tryon Street (aevy,
aacour 1).

= Another article on gangs in Charlotte also

mentions a gang fight occurring at Asian Corner
Mall. ´[«] two gangs fought with stun gunsand
pool sticks outside the Asian Corner Mall on North
Tryon Streetµ (Manware, Moore 2).

´For this solution it requires:

= Investments to clean up the buildings

= Clean the outside walls of the buildings

= Clean the inside of the mall

= Clean the restrooms

= Fix the parking lot, so there are no more pot holes

|

´This solution would not work because:

â People would not be willing to invest money into

a place that has already failed once

= Cleaning and fixing up the building still might not

guarantee an increase in customers

= Businesses might not want to risk opening up shop

in a place with a such a depressing past

   |

´For this solution it requires:

= The owners asking all the Asian communities to

help clean up and make over the mall

= Certain groups chip in by either manual labor

such as filling pot holes, others chip in by
donating money

= Turn the mall make over into a community event

in which the Asian community can get involved
and feel like they are apart of the mall.

   |

´This solution would not work because:

= Most Asian communities would not be willing to

commit their time and efforts into cleaning up a
mall that has already failed twice.

= Many Asian families do not want to just donate

their money to a cause they feel is unworthy.

= The business are privately owned, so why would

people volunteer to help privately owned
businesses?

 ë |

´ For this solution it requires:

= Change the name of the mall

= Instead of being an ´Asianµ mall, diversify it up

= Turn it into a shopping center because it already

failed to be a mall like the other malls in Charlotte.

= Change the target market of the mall

= Opening it up to other groups of people

= Make the mall more up-to-date

 ë |

´ Reasons why it would work:

= There are not enough Asians to target to keep the place

running, so why not invite all racial groups?

= The Family Dollar at A.C.M. is still in business because

everyone goes there, not just Asians

= Changing the target market will bring in more customers

because now Asians will not be the only customers

= More customers equal more revenue

= With more revenue, the mall can then afford to fix up the
place and become a successful mall/shopping center
