V ob life is one of the important parts of our
daily lives which cause a great deal of
stress
V t is very important for employer and
employees to realize the stress and the
stressor that cause all the negative effects
VDue to increasing number of universities
in malaysia , university academic staffs
may face more problems in their job as the
managements are facing competitive
pressure from other universities

Veehr and newman (1978) has defined stress as a
situation which will force a person to deviate from
normal condition due to change in his/her
psychological and physiological condition such that
the person is forced to deviate from normal condition.
VRole stress means anything about an organizational
role that produces adverse consequences for the
individual .(kahn and quinn, 1970).
Vamily and work are interrelated and interdependent
to extent that experiences in one area affect the
quality of the life.(sarantokos,1996).
VAccording to lasky (1995) demands associated with
family and finances can be a major source of µ extra-
organizational¶ stress that can complicate, or
precipitate, work place stress.
VRusso &vitaliano (1995) arqued that the occurrence
of stressors in the work place either immediately
following a period of chronic stress at home, or in
conjunction with other major life stressors, is likely to
have a marked impact on outcome.
VAccording to wilkes (1998) work overloads and time
constraints were significant contributors to work
stress among community nurses.
Vorkload can be defined as reluctance to come work
and a feeling of constant pressure accompanied by
the general physiological, psychological, and
behaviour symtoms. (division of human resource,
2000)
Vo perform better to their job, there is requirement
for workers to perform multiple tasks in the work
place to keep abreast of changing
technologies.(cascio,1995;quick,1997).
VAccording to eehr et al.(19760, cordes &
Dougherty (1993), cooper(1990), Dyer & quine
(1998), and Ursprung (1986) role ambiguity exists
when an indiviual lacks information about the
requirements of his or her role, how those
requirements are to be met, and evaluative
procedures available to ensure that the role is being
performed successfully.
V ackson & schuler (1985) and muchinsky (1997)
studies found role ambiguity leads to negative
outcomes as reduces confidence, a sense of
hopelessness, anxiety, and depression.

VAccording to stamps & piedmonte (1986) job
satisfaction has significant relationship with job
stress.
Vinokur-kaplan (1991) stated that organization
factors such as workload and working condition were
negatively related with job satisfation.
Vletcher & payne(1980) identified tha lack of
satisfaction can be a source of stress, while high
satisfaction can alleviate the effects of stress.

wo main constructs are included in the proposed research
model encompassing job stress and job satisfaction.
Definition of this variables are
XAccording to beehr (1995) job stress is defined as ³a
situation in which some characteristics of the work
situation are thought to cause poor psychological, or
physical health, or to cause risk factors making poor
health more likely.´
X ob satisfaction includes general elements and specific
elements; the whole perception of job pleasure is
considered as general elements; job security, pay, co-
worker, supervision, and personal growth, and
development are considered as specific elements.
(hackman & okham, 1980).

´ A survey instrument in the form of close-ended
questionnaire
´ his study has conducted in a public university in klang
valley.
´ Using the non-probability sampling technique, a total of
300 respondents were selected as a sample study from
the university.
´ he actual survey was conducted over a period one
month whereby personal interviews employed to obtain
the required information from respondents.
´ 203 academicians completed the questionnaire and the
rest did not return it for unknown reasons.

his instrument used in this study is composed of
3 parts.
1) 1st part deals with job stress. ob stress is
measured by ³job stress questionnaire, SQ´.
2) 2nd part includes job satisfaction which is
measured using job descriptive index, a
reliable facet measure over time, and
measured on a six point scale with least
satisfied (1), to very satisfied (6).
3) 3rd part includes a number of demographic
questions such as gender, age, marital status,
race, education level.

· t is very important that the university understands the
needs of its¶ employees and provide what is best for the
employees.
· Constant appraisal programs and appreciation should be
given to reinstate and motivate the employees.
· otivation is a key factor as well in affecting job stress
among the employees. Employees who are highly
motivated will feel happier and are more willing to work
for the organization.
· Unhealthy job stress among the people responsible in
assisting the future generation¶s education will ultimately
affect their intellectual and social abilities.
· hen employees face stress caused by the internal and
external environment of the institution, not only employer
but also students will experience the effect of the
stresses

· Sample consisted of one public university in
klang valley may limit the generalizability of the
results.
· As only one public university may not represent
the whole universities in malaysia.
· Results and findings may vary substantially
when sample size is increased or decreased.
· Potential correlation between some of the
independent variables(e.g. gender, race,
education level, technology, climate,
organization culture, emotional demands of
work, and unclear work roles) need to be
reported in a future study.
