THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
AND GLOBAL WARMING
The greenhouse effect is the rise in
temperature that the earth
experiences because certain gases
in the atmosphere trap energy from
the sun.
When sunlight enter the earth
atmosphere it passes through the
blanket of greenhouse gases.
As it reaches the earth surface
land, water, and biosphere absorb
the energy from the sun.

The greenhuse effect

Once absorbed, this energy is sent back into the

atmosphere .some of the energy passes back into
spaces, but much of it remains trapped in the
atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our
world to heat up.

GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is an excessive heating of
the earth surfaces from the addition of
greenhouse gases to the atmosphere from
anthropogenic (human caused) sources.
The main sources of added greenhouse
comes from the combustion of fossil fuels
in power plants (burning coal), automobiles
and factories.

• When more greenhouse gases are

accumulated in the atmosphere, more heat
will be trapped on earth and earth average
temperature rises.

The thinning of ozone
layer
• The thinning of the ozone layer is mainly
caused by the release of the (cfc) into the
atmosphere. This occur in the stratosphere.
• The uses of CFC include:
c) Air conditioners as coolant
d) For cleaning electronic circuit boards
e) As a solvent
f) For making foam product

the thinning of ozone
layer
CFC release chlorine into the
atmosphere;chlorine,in turn,breaks ozone
down into its constituents parts of oxygen.
Each CFC molecules can destroy many
ozone molecules and can last up to 50 years
in the atmosphere.
Over the last 100 years, the global sea level
has risen by about 10 to 25cm.The rate of
observed sea level rise suggests that there
has been a net positive contribution from the
huge ice sheets of Greenland and Antartica.
