Setting Yourself Up For Success

Why Contract?
 Clarify expectations for mutually open,
two-way communication up front
 Get clear on assumptions,
objectives and constraints
before you have a problem
 Ôdentify your boundaries, timelines
 Clarify authority and accountability
and make sure they match

Contracting with Management

Things to consider:
 Establish a collaborative (50/50)
relationship.
 Ask direct questions.
Elicit expectations and probe for concerns.
Clearly state what you need for success.
Clearly state what you are willing to do.
Be willing to postpone or say no if you feel there is a
low chance for success.
Ôf the meeting is not going well, discuss why.

Pitfalls to Avoid
 Management expectations
that are unreasonable, such as:
 How much time Lean activities
will take?
 How much can be
accomplished within a given
period of time?
The level of explicit and practical
support you need from them to be successful?
The level of their direct involvement that is appropriate?

Learn From the Mistakes of Other People

ÑÔ thought management knew before we
started the workshop that it would
disrupt production. But they didn¶t.´
ÑWhen Ô tried to open up communication
the manager thought Ô was ?
him.´
ÑÔts supposed to be easier to ask for
forgiveness than permission, but Ô
wouldn¶t have needed to if Ô just talked
to my manager up front.´
