Joints in the Body

Deciding whether or not to

improve your parts…
What is a joint?
 A place in the body where 2 or more
bones come together

 They allow bones to move in

different ways

 There are 2 kinds of joints:

MOVABALE and IMMOVABLE
Immovable Joints
 Connect bones in a way that allows
little or no movement
 Example: Cranial Sutures (fibrous);
Ribs/Sternum (cartilaginous)
Movable Joints
 Allow the body to make a wide range
of movements

 Types of moveable joints (synovial):

• Ball and Socket
• Pivot
• Hinge
• Gliding
Ball and Socket Joints
 Found in the hip and shoulder
 Allows multi-directional movement
Pivot Joint
 Found at the top of the head
(cervical vertebrae)
 Ability to rotate your head side to
side
Hinge Joint
 Found at the knee and elbow
 Allows forward and backward motion
Gliding Joint
 Found at the wrist and ankle
 Allows you to bend and flex and
move side-to-side
What happens when your joints
wear out???

 Total Joint Replacements

• To relieve constant pain and disability
due to damage of the joint structures

• In 2003, about 652,000 replacements

were performed in the US

• Mostly done for the hip and knee

How is it done?
 The damaged parts of the bones and
cartilage are replaced with metal and
plastic surfaces that are shaped to
restore structure and function
Total Knee Components
Before/After
(the knee):
Total Hip Replacement
How long do they last?
 In most older persons, it may last a
decade or more

 In younger individuals, they may

need a second replacement in their
lifetime
Benefits:
 Decrease/eliminate pain

 Increase mobility

 Keep an active lifestyle

 Improved quality of life

When will it be your turn???
