Introduction
Wide area disturbances have forced power companies to design system protection schemes. Wide Area Monitoring Protection and Control (WAMPAC) has gained importance after black out on August 10, 1996 in the North America. WAMPAC is used for system wide information and communication of selected local information to a remote location to counteract for large disturbances. Reliability and security is major concern.

In deregulated market have quick changes in system operational conditions. Gradual degradation grid will take place for small power excursions. In order to maintain sufficient security margins, well coordinated actions need to be developed. WAMPAC is effective solutions to improve power system. This is possible due to the technical developments.

Synchronized Measurement Technology

Synchronized Measurement Technology(SMT) is a new technology. SMT is measurement of widely dispersed located data synchronized with GPS. SMT provides real time information. SMT will allow improvements to be achieved in power system. SMT has the potential of becoming the backbone of WAMPAC.

Advantages of SMT
The measurements from widely dispersed locations can be synchronized with respect to a global positioning system. Voltage, phase angles can be measured directly. Design of an advanced early warning system. Accuracy and speed of system increases.

Conclusion
It will be increasingly important to obtain greater visibility and understanding of power system dynamics to operate the system securely. The seminar addresses the key reasons for implementation WAMPAC systems. In the first part of the seminar, a typical WAMPAC architecture is presented. The paper also provides overview of the main WAMPAC applications and demonstrates some applications. Since future power networks will become more and more complex and more difficult to predict during both steady-state and transient conditions, WAMPAC systems will become indispensable addition to every control room.
