INTRODUCTION
1. Goa lies between 14 - 16o North latitude and 73-75o longitudes on the west coast in India 2. Climate is warm and humid tropical with cool and pleasant weather in winter months 3. Average annual rainfall is 2800 mm. The total rainfall received during the year 2005-06 was 3345 mm 4. The highest and lowest temperatures are 35o C and 18o C 5. Relative humidity varies from 100% to 51%

6. The terrain is undulating with diverse soil conditions 7. Agriculture is pursued by about 16% of the population 8. Geographical area of the State is 3,61,113 Ha 9. Total cropped area is 171,455 Ha 40% area is under food grain crops Balance 60 % under commercial horticultural crops including vegetables

BOTTLENECKS
1. Pressure for conversion of land for other uses due to high land cost 2. Lack of super High yielding varieties 3. Imbalance and limited use of fertilizers 4. Fragmented and small, uneconomic land holdings 5. Low level of interest in agriculture and tendency of keeping lands fallow 6. High wages and unavailability of labour in time

MEASURES PROPOSED TO BE TAKEN


1. State needs a policy for - conversion of agricultural lands, Promotion of commercial horticulture, floriculture and high value vegetables, Development of Agro-ecotourism and model organic farms 2. Emphasis to increase area under Hybrid rice. KRH-2 & Sahyadri found suitable. Karjat -3 & MO-17 also promising to replace traditional Jyoti and Jaya, respectively 3. More emphasis on integrated nutrient management along with use of chemical fertilizers to increase production 4. Promotion of Group farming through UGs/SHGs with higher incentives and schemes 5. Financial incentives and support price are introduced to increase agriculture in State. Contract farming to be introduced soon due to amendments in APMC & Tenancy Acts

SOIL HEALTH AND NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT


 Two well equipped Soil Testing Labs  Soil samples analyzed in 2006-07 for NPK 24,000 nos and micronutrients 500 nos  Target for Soil analysis during 2007-08 = 30000 nos  Fertilizers are made available through 380sale points (151 co-operatives & 229 PVT)  Quality control through constant checks and sample analysis at CFQCL, Navi Mumbai  Organic/Compost waste management plant. Locally created compost pits and vermi compost units  Use of Pyrites and Rock phosphate for soil health improvement

PLANT PROTECTION MEASURES


 IPM adopted in the state from 1990  Bio-Control Lab established in 2005-06  Presently Trico-cards are produced, Approx 2000 cards distributed in 2006-07  Pheromone Lures, traps and other biological agents, biological pesticides are procured from registered producers  Whenever necessary, Chemical pesticides are used Pesticides used in 2006-07 = 6.9 Tones  Assistance also provided for weed control and fencing of cropped land

DEVELOPMENT OF IRRIGATION INFRASTRUCTURE AND WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORK


 About 21% of total cropped area is under irrigation  50 to 75 % financial promotional subsidy is provided for digging well, installation of pump, sprinkler and drip irrigation systems  Massive programme launched for desilting of village ponds, tanks with 50% & 100% assistance for individuals & UGs, respectively  1400 Ha area is likely to increase due to Tillari Irrigation Project, recently commissioned

EMPHASIS ON HORTICULTURE THROUGH NATIONAL HORTICULTURE MISSION


 Horticulture occupies 60% of total cropped area with Cashew, Coconut, Banana, Spices and vegetables  Cashew is major crop covering 54000 Ha followed by Coconut covering 25000 ha  Potential for development of horticultural crops including high value vegetables, floriculture and spice cultivation  National Horticulture mission launched in State during 2005-06  Area Expansion under NHM

SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES THROUGH WATERSHED MANAGEMENT


 Sustainable management of resources has been brought

through watershed approach under NWDPRA AND WGDP


 Approx 22757 Ha area covered under NWDPRA projects

and 5000 Ha under WGDP

programmes and household production has shown large impact on sustenance of resources, ground water recharge and increase in family income

STRENGTHENING OF EXTENSION NETWORK THROUGH ATMA


1. Block Technology Teams and Farmers Advisory

Committees constituted in 10 Talukas. 2. Farmers Information and Advisory Committee meets once a month and suggestions and new decisions taken. 3. S.R.E.P. is under printing. 4. SAMETI is established at Old Goa with appropriate infrastructure, AV aids, etc.
