Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation


INTRINSIC driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on any external pressure usually associated with high educational achievement and enjoyment by students. attribute their educational results to internal factors that they can control (e.g. the amount of effort they put in), believe they can be effective agents in reaching desired goals (i.e. the results are not determined by luck), are interested in mastering a topic, rather than just rotelearning to achieve good grades.

Intrinsic motivation can be defined as an individuals need to feel competency and pride in something (McCullagh, 2005). Therefore, athletes who are intrinsically motivated participate in sports for no apparent reward other than the satisfaction and pleasure they get from the activity itself. There are 3 types of intrinsic motivations (Weinberg & Gould, 2003): Knowledge Accomplishment Stimulation

BENEFITS
can promote student learning and achievement better than extrinsic motivation. Intrinsically motivated people are not influenced by external rewards or punishments for their work, choose to perform tasks because of the inherent pleasure or sense of accomplishment that comes from a job well done. children and adults who develop intrinsic motivation are much more likely to succeed on long-term projects and goals than those who are motivated by external factors.

Extrinsic Motivation
motivation by external or tangible rewards. We are motivated to perform by things or factors which come from other people or organizations. Typically these include: salary and what it can buy;fringe benefits;promotion and its trappings;security;the physical work environment;conditions of work.

TYPES OF EXTRINSIC
Extrinsic motivation is a type of motivation that comes from outside yourself. For many people, the satisfaction of a job well done is enough to ensure continued effort. Others, however, need extrinsic motivation. Depending on the individual, just a few words of praise may be enough, while others respond only to something substantial, such as money. Verbal Verbal praise, such as telling someone they did a good job, is a simple and often effective means of extrinsic motivation. Explaining in detail the reasons for the praise increases the effectiveness of this type of motivation.

CONSEQUENCES
overjustification effect occurs when an external incentive such as money or prizes decreases a person's intrinsic motivation to perform a task. According to self-perception theory, people pay more attention to the incentive, and less attention to the enjoyment and satisfaction that they receive from performing the activity. The overall effect is a shift in motivation to extrinsic factors and the undermining of pre-existing intrinsic motivation.
