COMPUTER COMMUNICATIONS

INTRODUCTION A computer is an electronic device. The computer is also capable of storing information, it which can be used later. It can process millions of instruction in a few seconds and at the same time with high accuracy.

NETWORK
y A large number of computer are interconnected

by copper wire, fiber optic cable, microwave and infrared or through satellite. y A system consisting of connected nodes made to share data, hardware and software is called network.

SOME IMPORTANT REASONS FOR NETWORKING

y Sharing of resources y Sharing information y communication

SHARI

O RESOURCES

y Primary goals of a computer network is to share resources.

SHARING INFORMATION
y Information on a single computer can be accessed by other

computer in the network.

COMMUNICATION
When several PCs are connected to each other message can be sent and received.

APPLICATION OF NETWORK The following are the areas where computer networks are employed. Electronic data interchange Tele-conferencing Cellular telephone Reservation of airlines, trains. Telemedicine ATM Internet Banking

BENEFITS OF NETWORK
 Effective handling of personal

communication. Allowing several users to access simultaneously important programs and date Allowing people to share costly equipment.

TYPES OF NETWORKNG The following are the general types of networking used today Local Area Network(LAN) Metropolitan Area Network(MAN) Wide Area Network(WAN)

LOCAL AREA NETWORK(LAN)

y A network connecting system and devices

insides a single building or buildings close to each other is called Local Area Network.

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK(MAN)

A network that spans a geographical area covering Metropolitan Area Network(MAN).

WIDE AREA NETWORK(WAN) A Wide Area Network is typically two or more LANs connected to gather across a wide geographical area.

NETWORK TOPOLOGY The network topology is the structure of layout of the communication channels that various computers on the network is called a node

NETWORK TYPES Network can be laid out in different ways. Star Ring Bus Hybrid FDDI Network

STAR In a star network all computer and other communication devices are connected to a central hub.

RING In a Ring network all computer s and other communication devices are connected to a continues loop.

BUS In a Bus network all communication devices are connected to a common bus.

HYBRID In a Hybrid Network is a combination of the above three networks suited to the need.

FDDI NETWORK
y A FDDI Network is a high-speed network

using fiber optic cable . y The main disadvantage is its high cost.

BASIC ELEMENTS IN NETWORK

y Network services y Transmission media y protocols

NETWORK SERVICES
y Network services are provided b y numerous

combinations of computer hardware and software. y Depending upon the task, network services require data, input/output resources and processing power to accomplish their goal.

TRANSMISSION MEDIA
y Transmission media is the pathway for

contacting each computer with other . y Transmission media include cables and wireless Technologies that allows networked devices to contact each other this provides a message delivery path.

PROTOCOLS
y A protocol can be one rule or a set of rules and

standards that allow different devices to hold conversations.
