O artigo definido tem uma nica forma escrita: THE

USOS I do Definido
Usa-se THE para falar de um substantivo j conhecido pelo contexto:
The car is in the garage.
USOS II do Definido
O artigo definido tambm usado antes de um substantivo concreto no singular para designar toda uma classe ou espcie em geral:
The tree is a beautiful machine.
Esse uso uma opo ao emprego do substantivo no plural, tambm com sentido geral, caso em que, em ingls, no se usa artigo:
Trees are beautiful machines.
Usa-se artigo antes de substantivos que designam coisas nicas em sua espcie:
The world. The universe. The Earth. The Sun.
ARTIGO INDEFINIDO
Existem duas formas de artigo indefinido em ingls: A e NA, ambas significando um, uma.
An ocean. A tree. An hour. A university. An hair.
O artigo indefinido em ingls no tem plural. S se usa a/an antes de substantivos no singular. No plural, ou no se usa artigo ou emprega-se o pronome indefinido some (alguns, algumas).
A pen. An egg. Pens. Some eggs.

USOS I do Indefinido
Usa-se a ou an de acordo com o som inicial da palavra seguinte. Assim, emprega-se a antes de uma consoante ou som de consoante:
A town. A house. A year. A unit.
Antes de palavras que comearem com u ou eu, sendo a pronncia equivalente a i em portugus:
A uniform. A useful instrument. A European car.
USOS II do Indefinido
Usa-se an antes de som de vogal:
An animal. An epidemic. An opportunity.
Ao contrrio do Portugus, usa-se o artigo indefinido antes de substantivos que designam profisso, nacionalidade ou religio:
John is an engineer / an Englishman / a Catholic.
O artigo indefinido tambm usado com sentido equivalente a por, em portugus, em expresses que indicam freqncia, velocidade ou preo:
Three times a week. Twice a day. Two dollars a gallon. Fifty cents a kilo. Sixty miles an hour.
