INTRODUCTION
TELECOMMUNICATIONS Tele is a Greek word. It means far-off distances. Communications is a Latin word. It means exchanging the information via electronic mode.

HISTORY :

The Indian Telecommunications network is the third largest in the world and the second largest among the emerging economies of Asia. Today, it is the fastest growing market in the world. The telecommunication sector continued to be the key sectors for Indias economic growth.

BACKGROUND

India had 851.70 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of June 2011. India is projected to have 1.159 billion mobile subscribers by 2013. Several leading global consultancies estimate that India will become the world's largest mobile phone market by subscriptions by 2013.

OSS

An operational support system (OSS) is a set of programs that help a communications service provider monitor, control, analyze and manage a telephone or computer network.

The exact definition of OSS architecture was formulated in 1990 in the model named Telecommunications Management Network (TMN)

OSS systems consist of four levels: Business Management Level (BML) Service Management Level (SML) Network Management Level (NML) Element Management Level (EML)

BUSINESS SUPPORT SYSTEMS (BSS)

Business support systems (BSS) are the components that a Telephone operator or Telco uses to run its business operations towards customer. Basically it deals with the taking of orders, payment issues, and revenues. The role of business support systems in a service provider is to cover four main areas: Product management Customer management Revenue management Order management

TELECOM REVENUE GROWS AT 12% DURING 2010-11


The countrys telecom sector has recorded a growth of 12% during 2010-11 as compared to 7% during 200910. The revenue during 2010-11 is Rs 119845 cr. The revenue is expected to grow further during 2011-12 when the 3G services are rolled out in more towns.
