INTRODUCTION
The construction of the Mumbai Metro was started in February 2008.
The project comprises of construction of three metro lines. A consortium led by ADAG along with Veolia Transport Co. and with MMRDA secured the contract of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor.

Simplex Infrastructures Ltd is carrying out construction.

Implemented on a Build-Operate-Transfer basis for a 35-year period

OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the Mumbai Metro is to provide mass transit services to people. To serve the areas not connected by the existing Suburban Rail network. Focuses on the development of an environmentally friendly system. Reduce the existing traffic congestion faced by both roadways as well as railways.

Why Metro Rail in Mumbai is needed?


The metro system is much needed for following reasons: 1. Better accessibility 2. Time saving 3. Very low ground space occupation 4. Greater Traffic capacity

ABOUT THE PROJECT


It comprises of a three-line high-capacity metro railway system spanning 63 kilometres. Phase I of the metro project includes construction of three metro lines. MMRDA unveiled a master transit plan a 146.5 long km metro system of which 32 km is underground

The project's master plan execution has been planned in three phases:
Phase I (2006-2011) Phase II (2011-2016)

Versova - Andheri Ghatkopar - 11.07 km (Construction started by Simplex Infrastractures Ltd., expected to be complete by 2012) Dahisar (E) - Charkop - Bandra - Mankhurd - 39.2 km.

Phase II (20122017)

Colaba - Bandra - Airport - 30 km Carnac Bunder-Wadala-Ghatkopar-Mulund-Teen Haath Naka - 40 km

Phase III ( 20162021)


Airport - Kanjur Marg - 9.5 km Andheri(E) - Dahisar(E) - 18 km Total Length 148.8 km

From the point of view of labor: Better hygiene facilities Provide temporary houses to the workforce. Pay wages adhering to the market standards or higher

CONCLUSION: They are: More reliable & comfortable. Reduces congestion of roads. In terms of energy consumption, it is most efficient. Seating capacity is more.
