Introduction
Towels are one of the most exported textile material in

Pakistan.
There are approx 7500 Towel Looms. Pakistan is now the second largest exporter of Towels and its

share in world export is 8%.

Reasons for variations in exports


Quota was one of the main restrictions towards

increasing exports.
The demand of Pakistan textiles rises due to cheap

Competitors Analysis
Pakistan is behind because of higher prices of yarn Pakistan is the main exporter of yarn to china. China has captured a 2/3 of Australian market

Pakistan used to have a major share in the Japan where usage

of towels is very high. Pakistan lost this market to China due to high yarn prices.

Assumptions were that with the removal of quotas,

price/unit costs will become more critical & competitive.

After effects were that china took most of the share in USA and EU

markets.

Chinas had a drastic increase of approx 330% in exports.

The goods of China, were very difficult to compete with, decreased

the price levels in the markets they entered, and offered best quality.

Phasing out of quota


1st major impact of the integration programme was in the third-

stage integration(on 1 January 2002)


Growth started In Jan 2002 Mid 2003 exports increased by 23% It has given advantage to towel industry.

Countervailing Duty: US serves notices on 11 towel exporters (January 27 2005)


US Department of Commerce to impose

countervailing duty on the exports of shop towels from Pakistan.


They demanded all trade related information from the

period from 1996 to 2001.

The review against the export of dumping or subsidized shop towels was undertaken after every five years. The first review was initiated in 1996 and

concluded in 2000

Export of towel, bed sheets: EU move brightens Pakistans prospects


EU has put restrictions on the of Chinese textile

products into EU countries, particularly towels and bed sheets containing micro fiber (melamine) contents
This would certainly boost Pakistans exports of towels

and bed sheets to EU countries

Pakistans exports were suffering to the extent of 25

percent to 30 percent in the presence of China.


The issue was on the agenda of WTOTBT committee

meeting held in Geneva but was not discussed because China decided to withdraw this item at the last moment.

Duty free access to Pakistani textiles so that the country

may overcome the disaster caused by the devastating floods


Pakistan has a case for receiving special treatment from the
