Tata motors is a multinational corporation headquartered in Mumbai, India. Tata motors is a part of Tata group, formerly known as TELCO(TATA engineering and locomotive company). Tata motors limited is Indias largest automobile company.

History

At the beginning of the 90s, the company sought to evolve and expand into the car market. Their first car was the Tata Indica, a model that enjoyed an unexpected success both in India and on other European markets. The second generation of Indica, the V2, was even more successful. Indica's major success gave Tata Motors the financial power to take over Daewoo Motors in 2004.

History

Indian manufacturers Tata Motors started with the company's foundation in 1945 as a locomotive producer. Tata got into the motoring business in 1954 .

Tata started exporting heavy-duty trucks but for the local market, they had to come up with lighter versions .
The first LCV model, the Tata 407, began production in 1986.

The company is the world's fourth largest truck manufacturer, and the world's second largest bus manufacturer. The company has R&D centres in Pune, Jamshedpur, Lucknow, India, South Korea,Spain and the UK.

Tata Motors, developed the first LCV, India's first SUV and, in 1998, the Tata Indica, India's first fully indigenous passenger car. In 2005, created a new segment by launching the Tata Ace, India's first indigenously developed mini-truck. In January 2008, unveiled its People's Car, the Tata Nano. In June 2009, the exciting new range of premium luxury vehicles from Jaguar and Land Rover were introduced for the Indian market.

International Profile

Tata Motors, the first company from India's engineering sector to be listed in the New York Stock Exchange. Tata Motors has operations in the UK, South Korea, Thailand and Spain. Jaguar Land Rover, a business comprising the two iconic British brands was acquired in 2008. In 2004, it acquired the Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company, South Korea's second largest truck maker.

International Profile

In 2005, Tata Motors acquired a 21% stake in Hispano Carrocera. In 2006, it formed a joint venture with the Brazil-based Marcopolo. The company's commercial and passenger vehicles are already being marketed in several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, South Asia and South America.

Did You Know?

In 1968, Russias space shuttle, after completing its orbit and making its scheduled landing in the Indian ocean completed its journey over land in a Tata truck. In the 1971 war, 45,000 trucks were used by the Indian army, at heights of up to 15,000 feet where even roads did not exist. The name Indica is derived from the words Indias Car. Tata Motors is the youngest passenger car company in the world.
