REASON CHOSEN:

The reason I have chosen Diabetes for my project is that is a common disease that is affected and sometimes caused by the diet Also there is a long history of diabetes in my family so I have first-hand and personal knowledge of the subject

A HISTORY OF DIABETES:
Diabetes is one of the oldest known diseases. 1ST Centuary B.C Aretaeus of Cappadocia, a Greek Physician, names the disease diabetes which means to siphon based on the fact that patients passed excessive amounts of urine

1425 The word diabete is first recorded in English medical text

1900 Drs. Joseph von Mering and Oskar Minkowski discovered that the pancreas plays a role in diabetes 1920 A dietary exchange system is created to help develop a diet for diabetes 1921 Frederick Banting and Charles Best discover insulin as diabetes medication 1936 Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are distinguished

FIGURES OF THOSE AFFECTED:

Diabetes has become an alarming problem worldwide. According to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF), the number of people with diabetes has risen from 30 million to 246 million in the last 20 years, making that at least 7.3 % of the worlds population. North America has the highest percentage with the Middle East and the Caribbean contributing to 12-20% of those affected. At the present there are 260 million people in the world with diabetes and at the current rate by 2025, more than 418 million people will be diagnosed with diabetes 80 years after the discovery of insulin there are still so many in need that cannot get access to it.

CAUSES OF DIABETES:
Type 1:
Type 1 is slightly more common in women

Type 2:
Type 2 tends to run in families Risk factors in developing Type 2 would be having a high-fat diet, obesity, high alcohol intake and high blood pressure Also developing age and pregnancy can make a person susceptible to Type 2 diabetes

It is most common in people of Northern European, African American and Hispanic American descent
It can be caused by environmental factors such as unavoidable viral infections. Type 1 can be partly inherited but it is more common to inherit Type 2

SYMPTOMS:
Common symptoms of diabetes would be:
Fatigue Unexplained Weight Loss

Excessive Thirst & Eating

Excessive Urination Infections Blurry Vision

More than half of all people with diabetes do not know they are diabetics
