Ahmedabad- The city of Ahmed


Was founded in 1411 A.D by Sultan Ahmed Shah. He built a new city Ahmadabad on the elevated plain of Bhadra on the east banks of river Sabarmati. The old Hindu capital Anahilvada-Patan was abandoned due to increasing insecurities. It was built close to the trading centre of Ashaval where the emperor had supporters and hence felt more secure. Enclosed residential colonies with narrow arterial winding streets. One or two known entrances with a few secret entrances.

Security during communal riots. Families linked by caste, religion, profession, etc. Have central community spaces in front of religious places or at important nodes known as Chowks. Old city of Ahmadabad was made of 360 Pols within the fortified compound.
