ROLL NO-28

Bluetooth wireless technology is an open specification for a low-cost, low-power, short-range radio technology for ad-hoc wireless communication of voice and data anywhere in the world.

One of the first modules (Ericsson)

A recent module

wireless protocol utilizing short-range communications technology

creates a single digital wireless protocol

capable of connecting multiple devices and overcoming problems arising from synchronization of these devices

The Bluetooth logo merges the Germanic runes

analogous to the modern Latin letters H and B: (for Harald Bluetooth) (Hagall) and (Berkanan) merged together, forming a bind rune.

What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications technology.

Why this name?

It was taken from the 10th century Danish King Harald Blatand who unified Denmark and Norway.

When does it appear?

1994 Ericsson study on a wireless technology to link mobile phones & accessories. 5 companies joined to form the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) in 1998. First specification released in July 1999.

Bluetooth is a standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption enables devices to communicate with each other when they are in range devices use a radio communications system, so they do not have to be in line of sight of each other

Wireless control of and communication between a mobile phone and a hands-free headset. Wireless networking between PCs in a confined space & where little bandwidth is required.

Wireless communications with PC input and output devices, such as mouse, keyboard and printer.
Dial-up internet access on desktops or PDA using a data-capable mobile phone as a modem..
9

to use Bluetooth, device must be compatible with certain Bluetooth profiles. define the possible applications and uses of the technology. Bluetooth profile is a wireless interface specification for Bluetooth-based communication between devices

Bluetooth profile resides on top of the Bluetooth Core Specification

Wi-Fi higher throughput and covers greater distances & requires more expensive hardware & may present higher power consumption. Bluetooth is replacement for cabling in smallscale applications, Wi-Fi is a replacement for cabling for general LAN access Bluetooth can be taken as replacement for USB or any other serial cable link, whereas Wi-Fi is wireless Ethernet communications
13

A desktop must have a Bluetooth adapter in order to communicate with other Bluetooth devices (such as mobile phones, mouse and keyboards).

While some desktop and most recent laptops come with a built-in Bluetooth adapter, others will require an external one .
Unlike its predecessor, which required a separate adapter for each device, Bluetooth allows multiple devices to communicate with a computer over a single adapter.

Bluetooth specification developed in 1994 by Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson working for Ericsson Sweden. specification based on frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology.

specifications formalized by Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

It was established by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Toshiba, and Nokia, and later joined by many other companies.

Some of the versions that have come are:

Bluetooth 1.0 and 1.0B-transfers of up to 480Kbit/s Bluetooth 1.2 -transfers of up to 650 Kbit/s Bluetooth 2.0 -transfers of up to 720 Kbit/s Bluetooth 2.1 -transfers of up to 2.1 Mbit/s High speed Bluetooth -transfers of up to 250 Mbit/s Bluetooth 3.0 -transfers of up to 480 Mbit/s

19

Bluetooth networking transmits data via low-power radio waves. communicates on a frequency of about 2.45 gigahertz

sends out very weak signals of about 1 mill watt

Every device has a unique 48-bit address
20

Bluetooth will support wireless point-to-point and point-tomultipoint (broadcast) between devices in a piconet. Point to Point Link

Master - slave relationship Bluetooth devices can function as masters or slaves

m
It is the network formed by a Master and one or more slaves (max 7) Each piconet is defined by a different hopping channel to which users synchronize to Each piconet has max capacity (1 Mbps)

Bluetooth device transmits following info. on demand: Device name, Device class, List of services, Technical information, for example, device features, manufacturer, Bluetooth specification used provides agreement at :physical level -- Bluetooth is a radio-frequency standard. protocol level, where products agree on when bits are sent, how many will be sent at a time etc.

24

Pairs of devices establish relationship by learning (by user input) a password known as a passkey.
Pairs can be deleted at any time by either device. Devices generally require pairing owner before they allow a remote device to use any of their services.

device that wants to communicate with trusted device can authenticate identity of other device.

Encryption can be turned off, and passkeys are stored on the device file system.

Trusted devices encrypt data that they exchange so that no one can listen in.
25

It's wireless and therefore susceptible to spying and remote access

Security methods include authorization and identification procedures that limit use of Bluetooth services to registered user and require that users make conscious decision to open a file or accept a data transfer user can simply switch his Bluetooth mode to "nondiscoverable" and avoid connecting with other Bluetooth devices entirely
26

Bluejacking involves Bluetooth users sending a business card to other Bluetooth users within a 10-meter radius. If user doesn't realize what message is, he might allow the contact to be added to his address book, and the contact can send him messages that might be automatically opened because they're coming from a known contact.

Bluebugging to remotely access a user's phone and use its features, including placing calls and sending text messages.

Car Whisperer is a software that allows hackers to send audio to and receive audio from a Bluetoothenabled car stereo.

FUTURE OF BLUETOOTH
Success of bluetooth depends on how well it is integrated into

consumer products - Consumers are more interested in applications than the technology - Bluetooth must be successfully integrated into consumer products - Must provide benefits for consumer - Must not destroy current product benefits Key Success Factors - Interoperability - Mass Production at Low Cost - Ease of Use - End User Experience

CONCLUSION
A new global standard for data and voice
Eliminate Cables Low Power, Low Range, Low Cost Network Devices Future Improvements

- Master-Slave relationship can be adjusted dynamically for optimal resource allocation and utilization.
