Why Are We Here?
• Traffic crashes are the leading cause of
unintentional severe injuries & death.
• Many of these deaths and injuries could
have been prevented with proper restraint
use.
• Because we care and together we can
make a difference.

Defining Injury
• Caused by the transfer of energy to
tissues
• Results from acute exposure to thermal,
mechanical, electrical, or chemical
energy
• Can be unintentional or intentional
damage

childhood deaths
• MVC = 42 % of all unintentional injury-
related deaths
• 6 children killed………..each day in 2001
• 732 children injured……each day in 2001
• Annual cost of childhood MVC
deaths/injuries = exceeds $ 36 billion
