Origin of NAFED

Established on the auspicious day of Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October 1958. Nafed is registered under the Multi State Co-operative Societies Act.

Nafed was setup with the object to promote Co-operative marketing of Agricultural Produce to benefit the farmers.

Objectives of Nafed
The objects of the NAFED shall be to organise, promote and develop marketing, processing and storage of agricultural, horticultural and forest produce, distribution of agricultural machinery, assist for technical advice in agricultural production. To facilitate, coordinate and promote the marketing and trading activities of the cooperative institutions in agricultural and other commodities, articles and goods. To establish processing units for processing of agricultural, horticultural and forest produce and wool. To act as agent of any Government agency or cooperative institution, for the purchase, sale, storage and distribution of agricultural, horticultural, forest and animal husbandry produce, wool, agricultural requisites and other consumer goods

Business
Domestic operations of Nafed mainly comprise of outright business, joint venture business with member federation/societies, agency & consignment business and implementation of price support scheme/market intervention scheme of the government of India. Nafed helps farmers by procuring their produce like food grains, pulses, oilseeds, spices, cotton, tribal produce, jute & jute products. Eggs, Fresh Fruits & Vegetables throught the established cooperative network all over the country with active involvement marketing societies at mandi level. NAFED also provides marketing assistance to the farmers by arranging disposal of their produce on consignment basis at terminal markets to enable them fetch best possible price for their produce.

Industrial Activities
NAFED BIO-FERTILIZER, INDORE & BHARATPUR NAFED COLD STORAGE AND GODOWN AT DELHI NAFED WAREHOUSING & PROCESSING INDUSTRIES, VASHI NAFED KRISHI YANTRA UDYOG, BHIWADI, RAJASTHAN

Seed
NAFED also supplied seeds of varies crops such as wheat, paddy, maize, vegetables, spices, fodder, horticulture and planting material to State Government Departments in the States of Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttrakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Haryana and Punjab. NAFED has also undertaken Seed production program of Soyabean during Kharif 2009-10 in Joint Venture in Madhya Pradesh. In the financial year 2009-10, NAFED has achieved a record turnover of Rs. 171.72 croers.

Fertilizer
During the year 2009-10, Nafed continued its efforts to provide fertilizers to the farmers at reasonable price. In the States of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, north-Eastern and the Southern states of India. NAFED marketed Urea, DAP, NPK and other Fertilizers valued at R 87.96 crores. The sale of fertilizers has been arranged by the concerned branches of NAFED through its own outlets, franchisees, dealers and member cooperative societies to the farmers even in the remotest areas. Through this business, NAFED has provided better service to the farmers and also helped in generating employment.

Organic Farming
NAFED is undertaken organic project under Rastriya Krishi Vikas yojana (RKVY) . Implementation of Adoption and certification of Organic Agriculture management system with Online Traceability system of facilitation of Export and Domestic Retail Chain in Uttar Pradesh. National Horticultural Mission (NHM) Implementation, Training and Certification of Organic Farming with Traceability Records (e-Organic Agriculture ) for the facilitation of export of Horticultural Crops from the state of Utter Pradesh.

Joint Venture
In joint venture with cooperative federations/marketing societies to promote cooperation among cooperatives and to strengthen cooperative marketing. Commodities handled in join venture were 567 MTs Paddy valuing Rs.51.60 Lakhs and 2515 MTs of Raw Cotton valuing Rs.668.44 lakhs in joint venture.

Agency Consignment
NAFED undertakes purchase and sale of various agricultural commodities on consignment/agency basis on behalf of marketing cooperatives to lend a helping hand to them either for arranging procurement or sale of agricultural commodities at most competitive price. During the year 2009-2010, NAFED handled jute products valuing Rs 653.79 lakh and Fresh Fruits and Vegetables valuing Rs. 34.77 lakhs on agency / consignment basis.

Consumer Marketing
NAFED continues to serve the consumers by providing them good quality consumer items of daily need on reasonable rates through its retail outlets. NAFED is running its ten own Outlets at five locations in Delhi and two at Shimla. During the year 2008-09, Nafed started retail outlets at GTB Hospital premises at Shahadra,Delhi to cater to the need of residents in the hospital premises and nearby areas.

NAFED also arranged supplis of customer items to more than 100 prominent Institutions comprising of Hotels,Hostels,Hospitals,Public Sector Undertakings, Government Departments, Para Military Forces etc.
During the yesr 2009-10 NAFED sold various consumer products and registered a total turnover of RS.18.54 crores. Poultry Products

To help the poultry farmers, NAFED handled eggs and Poultry Feed valued at Rs.2.73 crore during the year 2009-10.
