EC105. 67 1
Objective

On completion of this period, you would be able to

know

• The working of keyboard switch

• Specification of keyboard switch.
• Application of keyboard switch.
• The working of thump weel switch.
• Specifications of thump weel switch.
• Applications of thump weel switch.

EC105. 67 2
Classification

Key board

Mechanical Magnetic Membrane Capacitive

EC105. 67 3
Mechanical key board switch

• Spring loaded contacts.

• Actual contact between two plated phosphor bronze

contacts causes the switching.

• A single key board with just 0 to 9 keys can be used for

making a selection of any number of combinations.

EC105. 67 4
Key board switch

EC105. 67 5
Magnetic key board switch

• Uses a magnet and a reed switch

EC105. 67 6
Membrane key board switch

• Uses a thin acetate membrane and a foil which bends and

makes a contact.

• A thin sheet of metal is made of usually phosphorous

bronze or conductive rubber.

• This is pressed through a hole in an insulating plastic film.

• Makes a contact to the bottom PCB or wafer which has a

plated round there.

EC105. 67 7
Capacitive key board switch

• Uses press to make a capacitive coupling for the signal.

• AC Signal is coupled through when the spongy wafer

presses on the PCB tracks.

• This causes the capacitive feed through.

EC105. 67 8
Capacitive key board switch

• In this type of keyboard, pressing the key

changes the capacitance of a pattern printed on a
PC board.
• Usually this permits a pulse or pulse train to be
sensed. Unlike "dome switch" keyboards
• The pattern will be covered by a thin, insulating
film.
• Capacitive keyboards are inexpensive
• Resist wear, water, foreign objects and dirt.
• They are common in PC keyboards.
EC105. 67 9
Principle

• Makes or breaks circuits as wheel is turned on PCB wafer

EC105. 67 10
Construction

• A thumb operated rotating wheel is present on front.

• Shows the number as the wheel is turned by hand.

• Wheel rotates on the edge.

• Numbers appear on a narrow vertical window.

EC105. 67 11
Construction

• A set of contacts are present on the spring mounted

PCB wafer.

• PCB wafer is made with nickel over gold plating.

• Contacts are made of gold plated beryllium copper.

EC105. 67 12
Thumb wheel switch

EC105. 67 13
Working

• Rotating knob is rotated.

• This make a contact with the set of contacts present on

the spring mounted PCB wafer.

• Provides a connection for each of the selected position.

• Numbers appear on a narrow vertical window.

EC105. 67 14
Configurations of Thumb wheel switch

EC105. 67 15
Types

Thumb wheel switch
