BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION

Several things can prevent the message from reaching the intended recipient or from having the desired effect on the recipient. They are referred to as Barriers of Communication. Types of Barriers: 1. Physical, external, or mechanical barriers. 2. Semantic or language barriers. 3. Socio Psychological barriers.

BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION
1. Physical, external, or mechanical barriers: 1.1. Defects in the medium: The only way to overcome this barrier is to postpone the communication or use an alternative medium. 1.2. Noise: Any disturbance which occurs in the transmission process. 1.3. Defects in the organizations communication system: The system of internal communication has to be checked constantly to make sure that there are no undue delays in conveying information.

2. Semantic and Language barriers: Words have multiple meanings. Sentences can convey entirely different meanings depending on how they are spoken. Words mean different things to different people. Technical terms can be a barrier to communication. (e.g. mouse)

3. Socio Psychological Barriers: Skill in communicating has to be cultivated. People have personal feelings, desires, fears and hopes, likes and dislikes, attitudes, views, and opinions. Problems of understanding, interpretation, and response to communication arise partly from our socially-learnt attributes and partly from our personal attributes.

Cross Cultural Barriers: Culture is a shared set of values and attributes of a group; it is the sum total of the ways of living built up by a group and transmitted from one generation to another.

Some of the most significant differences between cultures are: National character/ basic personality. Language. Values and norms of behavior. Social relationships. 5. Concepts of time. 6. Concepts of space. 7. Thinking positively. 8. Non-verbal communication, & 9. Perception.

Overcoming Barriers: Periodic review and reorganization of communication networks is also needed to ensure that information reaches people in time.
