The Polynomial Project

Introduction

The concept of degree of a polynomial is important, because it gives us information about the behavior of the polynomial on the whole. The concept of polynomial functions goes way back to Babylonian times, as a simple need of computing the area of a square is a polynomial, and is needed in buildings and surveys, fundamental to core civilization. Polynomials are used for fields relating to architecture, agriculture, engineering fields such as electrical and civil engineering, physics, and various other science related subjects.

Task 2

Task 1 Task 3

Task 4

Task 1

Find the polynomial that gives the following values

A. Write the system of equations in A, B, C, and D that you can use to find the desired polynomial.

B. Solve the system obtained from part a.

FOR B: A+2B= -6 10+2B= -6 2B= -6 -10 2B= -16 B = -8

FOR C: A+3B + 3C= -17 10+3(-8)+3C= -17 10 24 + 3C = -17 -14 + 3C = -17 3C = -17 + 14 3C = -3 C = -1

FOR D: A + 6B + 24C + 72D = 82 10 + 6(-8) + 24(-1)+72D = 82 10 48 24 + 72D = 82 -62 + 72D = 82 72D = 82 + 62 72D = 144 D=2

C. Find the polynomial that represents the four ordered pairs.

= 10 + -8(x + 1) + -1(x + 1)(x 1) + 2(x + 1)(x 1)(x 2) = 10 + -8x -8 + -1(x2 x + x 1) + 2 (x2 x + x 1) (x 2) = 10 8x 8 x2 + 1 + 2 (x3 2x2 x + 2 ) =10 8x 8 x2 + 1 + 2x3 4x2 2x + 4 =2x3 x2 4x2 2x 8x + 4 8 + 10 + 1 =2x3 5x2 10x + 7

P(x) = 2x3 5x2 10x + 7

D. Write the general form of the polynomial of degree 4 for 5 pairs of numbers.

Task 2

Find the zeros of the polynomial found in task 1

A.Show that the 3 zeros of the polynomial found in task 1 are: First zero lies between -2 and -1 Second zero lies between 0 and 1 Third zero lies between 3 and 4.

As we can see from the table between -1 and 1 there are two values are missing these value are 0 & 1 so when we find p(0) and p(1) we will find the the first one is (+) and 2nd is (-) same as the 1st and 3rd zeroes

P(x) = 2x3 5x2 10x + 7 P(0) = 2(0)3 5(0)2 10(0) + 7 = 7 P(1) = 2(1)3 5(1)2 10(1) + 7 = -6 Between 0 and 1

P(x) = 2x3 5x2 10x + 7

Between -2 and -1

P(-2) = 2(-2)3 5(-2)2 10(-2) + 7 = -9 P(-1) = 2(-1)3 5(-1)2 10(-1) + 7 = 10

P(x) = 2x3 5x2 10x + 7 P(3) = 2(3)3 5(3)2 10(3) + 7 = - 14 P(4) = 2(4)3 5(4)2 10(4) + 7 = 15
Between 3 and 4

B.Find to the nearest tenth the third zero using the Bisection Method for Approximating Real Zeros.

Third zero lies between 3 and 4.

f(3) = 2(3)3 5(3)2 10(3) + 7 = - 14 f(4) = 2(4)3 5(4)2 10(4) + 7 = 15 (3 + 4 ) / 2 = 3.5 f(3.5) = 2(3.5)3 5(3.5)2 10(3.5) + 7 = -3.5 (3.5 + 4 ) / 2 = 3.75 f(3.75) = 2(3.75)3 5(3.75)2 10(3.75) + 7 = 4.66 (3.5 + 3.75 ) / 2 = 3.625 f(3.625) = 2(3.625)3 5(3.625)2 10(3.625) + 7 = 0.32 Since f (3) = -14 and f (4) = 15, there is at least one real zero between 3 and 4. The midpoint of this interval is 3.5 Since f(3.5) = -3.5 , the zero is between 3.5 and 4. The midpoint of this interval is 3.75. Since f(3.75) is about 4.66, the zero is between 3.5 and 3.75. The midpoint of this interval is 3.625 Since f(3.625) is about 0.32. The zero is between 3.625 and 3.5. Therefore, the zero is 3.6 to the nearest tenth.

Task 3

Real World Construction

You are planning a rectangular garden. Its length is twice its width. You want a walkway w feet wide around the garden. Let x be the width of the garden.

A. Choose any value for the width of the walkway w that is less than 6 ft.

W = 4 ft

B. Write an expression for the area of the garden and walk.

Area = length . Width Area = 2x .x Area = 2x2 ft2

C. Write an expression for the area of the walkway only.

Area of the garden = 2x2 ft2

Area of the garden and walkway = length . Width Area of the garden and walkway = (2x + 4) . (x +4) Area of the garden and walkway = 2x2 + 12x + 16 ft2 Area of the walkway = (area of the garden & walkway) (area of the garden) Area of the walkway = (2x2 + 12x + 16 ) (2x2 ) Area of the walkway = 12x + 16 ft2

D. You have enough gravel to cover 1000ft2 and want to use it all on the walk. How big should you make the garden?

Area of the walk way = 12x + 16

Area of the walkway = 1000ft2

1000 = 12x + 16 984 = 12x 82 = x

Width

Length = 2 x Length = 2 (82) Length = 164 ft

So we find that x=82 The width = 82 ft The length = 164 ft

The area of the garden = 2x2 The area of the garden = 2(82)2 The area of the garden = 13448 ft2
