BASIC CONCEPTS OF PRODUCT DESIGN PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT VALUE ENGINEERING
DEFINITION OF PRODUCT DESIGN: To Design a Product, to Meet the Required Functions that is called as Product Design. The Product may be an Object or an Assembly. TYPES OF PRODUCT DESIGN: New Product Design Existing Product Design

Simple Example: Product: cloth drying clips Functions: Hold clothes on the cloth line Visualize: A Gripping gadget, Normally closed, With some force it opens. Constraints: Cloth quality, thickness of the rope or wire used as cloth line, life expectancy, cost Design: Metal, Plastic or Combination of Plastic and metal.
INTRODUCTION GROWTH
MATURITY DECLINE
Why Product Life cycle: Present Market Strategy. Better Customer satisfaction. Reduced Risk Level. To evaluate Profit & losses.
Introduction 1.Sales are low. 2. Less Profit. Growth 1. Sales is more. 2. Profit level rises. 3. Competition level is high. Maturity 1. Most common stage for all markets. 2. Restricted product modification & Improvement.
Decline Stage:1. Product Market is shrinking. 2. Reducing the overall amount of profit. 3. Greater care has to be taken for product stocks. Examples:
Introduction I-POD
Maturity PC Faxes
E-conferencing
FMEA
Failure Mode & Effects Analysis
Definition:-
Method developed for system engineering, that is used to examine potential failures in products or processes. Used to evaluate Priorities of Risks & helps to determine Remedial Actions to minimize the risk of failures.
Applications:
Recognize and evaluate the potential failure of a product /process and its effect. identify actions which could eliminate or reduce the occurrence, or improve detectability
How it works: 1. Creating Description-View & Decide the Ranking on the basis of following criteria Severity (S) Likelihood of Occurrence (O) Inability of controls to detect it (D) 2. Defining a Index ranges from 1(lowest risk) to 10(highest risk) to evaluate Risk Priority Number(RPN)
VALUE ENGINEERING
VALUE = Definition: VE is a systematic approach intended to achieve desired functions of a product or process at an overall minimum cost without in any way affecting quality, reliability, delivery, safety or the environment. FUNCTION COST
VE Procedure:
Identify the product. Collect the relevant information. Define Different functions. Create different alternatives. Develop the best alternative. Implement the alternative.
Aim of Value Engineering: Simplify the Product. Use cheaper and better Materials. Modify and improve product design. Use Efficient Process. Reduce the Product cost. Save money or to increase the profits.
