OBJECTIVE
Sixth Sense is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact. It was developed by Pranav Mistry, a PhD student in the Fluid Interfaces Group at the MIT Media Lab. Sixth Sense bridges the gap by bringing intangible, digital information out into the tangible world, and allowing us to interact with this information via natural hand gestures and movements. The concept in all its brevity comprises of a pocket projector, a mirror and a camera. The hardware components are coupled in a pendant like mobile wearable device.
STUDY OF COMPONENTS
Camera Projector Mirror Mobile Component Coloured Marker
CAMERA
- Captures an object in view and tracks the users hand gestures. - It sends the data to smart phone or web enabled handheld device. - It acts as a digital eye, connecting you to the world of digital information.
PROJECTOR
-The Projector projects visual information enabling surfaces and physical objects to be used as interfaces - The project itself contains a battery inside, with 3 hours of battery life. - A tiny LED projector displays data sent from the smart phone on any surface in view : object, wall, or person
MIRROR
The usage of the mirror is significant as the projector dangles pointing downwards from the neck.
SMART PHONE
- Web-enabled smart phone processes the video data. - Other software searches the Web and interprets the hand gestures
COLOUR MARKERS
- They are placed at the tip of the users fingers. - Marking the users fingers with red, yellow, green, and blue tape helps the webcam recognize Gestures. - The movements and arrangements of these makers are interpreted into gestures that act as interaction instructions for the projected application interfaces.
METHODOLOGY
Send for Processing
Capture
Send Information Reflect on Desired Surface
Project Information
-The Hardware that makes sixth sense work is a pendant like mobile wearable Interface. - It has a camera, a mirror and a projector and is connected wirelessly to a Bluetooth enabled smart phone that can be accommodated comfortably into ones pocket. - The camera recognizes individuals, images and hand gestures. - Information is sent to the Smartphone for processing. - The downward facing projector projects the output image on to the mirror. - Mirror reflects the image on to the desired surface. - The digital information is now available to the physical world.
ADVANTAGES
- Enhanced Portability. - Supports Multi Touch and Multi User Interaction. - Forms a Bridge between the Physical World and Virtual Information. - Cost Effective even with the current Hardware Limitations. - Data Access in Real Time, NO Lag time. - Mind Mapping of Ideas Instantly. - Open Source.
DISADVANTAGES
- Too much reliance on available bandwidth which at times is a limiting factor, especially in developing countries. - Complicated for beginners, decent level of I.T. Literacy required. - Open Source Nature of the Concept limits Marketability . - Feigned Interest by Information Majors like Google and Apple due to competing technologies like Cloud. - Mobile Connectivity still very much at its infancy to tap the full potential of this technology.
FUTURE SCOPE
Make A Call
User can use the Sixth Sense Device to project a keypad onto the hand, then use that virtual keypad to make a call
Virtual Wristwatch
A simple gestural circle on the wrist by the user gets a virtual watch that gives the correct time
LIVE Newspapers
Sixth Sense can be programmed to project related videos onto newspaper articles you are reading
Drawing Applications
This lets the user draw on any surface by tracking the fingertip movements of index finger
Zooming Features
The user can zoom in or zoom out using intuitive hand movements
Flight Updates
Get On Line Flight Schedules and Changes/Delay in Boarding processes
Gestural Camera
Sensors Situated on the finger tips of the thumb and the index fingers can act as the frame of the photograph to be clicked. A simple snapping gesture can result into a photograph.
