Communication is atwo wayprocess oftransmitting & receiving verbal& nonverbal messages & exchanging ideas or information

18

That takes information and converts it to a signal Context :Every message whether oral or written starts with context. Context is a broad term that includes country, culture, organization & external & internal stimuli.

19

Sender-Encoder :-Encoder is the sender of message, the writer or speaker depends on whether the message is oral or written. We use symbols, graphics or pictures to express our message so that the receiver will understand it & react with the response we desire.

20

Message :-The message is the core idea we wish to communicate. It consists of both verbal &nonverbal symbols. Our first task is & what content to include. We must consider our context &especially the receiver of our message, how the receiver will interpret it & how it may affect ourrelationship

That carries the signal. Medium is the way through which the sender sends the message. Like message content the choice of medium is influenced by the relationship between sender & receiver. It depends on themessage, cost ofmessage, the amountof information & number of receiver to select the channel of message.

That receives the signal and converts it back into usable information Receiver-Decoder :-Decoder is the receiver of the message & he may be more than one. The receiver as well as the sender are influenced by context & by external & internal stimuli.

Feedback :-It is the response of receiver based on a clear understanding of the symbols. Feedbackcan be oral or written. It can also be an action such as silence which is almost ineffective. Senderneed feedback in order to determine the success or failure of the message

The care of patients now almost inevitably seems to involve many different individuals, all needing to share patient information and discuss their management. As a consequence there is increasing interest in, and use of, information and communication technologies to support health services.

26

Indeed, if information is the lifeblood of healthcare then communication systems are the heart that pumps it.1Yet, while there is significant discussion of, and investment in, information technologies, communication systems receive much less attention.

Hospital Communication System offers turnkey solutions to help our clients meet their television ,nurse call, security, and others communication needs. Good medical care depends upon effective communication between patients and providers. Ineffective communication can lead to improper diagnosis and delayed or improper medical treatment.

Hospital television On demand education/information system Satellite systementertainment, teleconferences and programming packages Nurse call system, intercom and overhead paging Infants abduction and patient wandering Access control system Security system In-building wireless phone system Service and maintenance contracts
29

Telemedical systems, as we have seen, have been actively explored at the interface between hospital-based specialist services and primary care. Similar problems exist between small hospitals, which may not have access to the highly specialised personnel that can be found in larger institutions like teaching hospitals.
30

In health care, where we are constantly reminded of the need to make pragmatic improvements to the outcomes of health care delivery, empirical evidence is needed to guide the use of new technologies, and there is a now thankfully a growing literature on the value of communication systems in health service delivery. Nevertheless there remains a substantial imbalance in the attention that is given to communication support, compared to that paid to traditional information

The Right Connection Could Save Billions of Dollar

In clinical care we often discuss the critical need to have information about the right patient delivered to the right clinician at the right time. What is not discussed is the critical need for clinicians to connect and communicate with the right person about the right patient at the right time.

a)

Cultural Differences
Presenting new technologies is challenging when dealing with an industry entrenched in using the same telephone, fax, and pager systems for decades. Many problems in healthcare stem from the industry clinging to these outdated methods of communication, without understanding the benefits brought about by newer solutions.

Communication Breakdown :
Communication in healthcare fails for many reasons: necessary personnel cannot be identified or located; they may not be available or may not respond in a timely manner;or the communication channel of choice may not be well suited to the task at hand. Eg email during time of Heart attack.

Productivity and Safety at Risk

If there is no proper coordination and proper communication between the nurses and the staff than it result in customer dissatisfaction and ultimate result in customer loss In hospital industry every minute is important if proper utilization of time is there than one can save life else Vise versa

Resources Working Together: Barriers to implementing modern technologies stem not only from outdated technology infrastructures and a conservative industry culture, but also from a lack of interoperability among databases and applications. For example, numerous directories, oncall databases, and coverage lists must be able to work together to streamline the process of identifying the proper contact.

Communication is an essential tool which plays very important role in effective and efficient running of hospital. If effective communication system is not there in hospital it result in patient dissatisfaction and ultimately loss of internal as well as external customer.
