Introduction
What is Home Automation?
Anything that gives you remote or automatic control of things around the home.

College of Engineering, Chengannur

What is Zigbee?
a low-cost, low-power, wireless networking standard Based on IEEE 802.15.4 operates in the ISM radio bands Low data rate (approx 250 Kbit/s) Range of operation - 30 to 100 m
College of Engineering, Chengannur

Wi-Fi
Term Wi-Fi refers to wide fidelity

Commonly used WLAN

Uses the 2.4GHz ISM band High Data rate

College of Engineering, Chengannur

Existing Home Automation Technologies

Java based system Bluetooth Phone based system Hand Gestures IEEE 1394 based system
College of Engineering, Chengannur

Analysis of the Existing Systems

Complex and expensive architecture Intrusive installation

Lack of network interoperability

Interface inflexibility Security and safety
College of Engineering, Chengannur

Features of the proposed system

Reduced Complexity Low cost Flexible and Scalable Variety of controls Remote monitor and control Secure and Safe
College of Engineering, Chengannur

Why Zigbee and WiFi?

Wi-Fi for high data rate applications

ZigBee for devices with out Wi-Fi

Access to the home automation system from Wi-Fi enabled devices like mobile phones Can exist together with less interference problems

Zigbee remote control

It includes
Integrated Remote Controller ZigBee to IR Converter ZigBee Power Adapter

College of Engineering, Chengannur

15

Integrated Remote Controller(IRC)

ZigBee module- Acts as a coordinator IR Receiver- take Ir signals from other remote controllers for learning
College of Engineering, Chengannur

16

ZigBee to IR Converter (ZB2Ir)

Converts ZigBee signals from the IRC into the specific infrared signals Broadcasted to all devices in the transmission range

College of Engineering, Chengannur

17

ZigBee Power Adapter(ZPA)

For electrical appliances with no control equipment uses solid state relay

College of Engineering, Chengannur

18

Network
Uses Mesh topology- to overcome a disconnection due to obstacles

College of Engineering, Chengannur

19

System Initialization/ implementation

Network initialization phase
Scans all available radio channels Assign MAC address for all devices in the network

Wi-Fi connection through ADSL modem router Home Gateway connects with ZigBee and Wi-Fi network Input to Home Gateway can be either from Wi-Fi or ZigBee network
College of Engineering, Chengannur

20

Conclusion
Identified the problems of existing home automation systems Solved the problem of network interoperability

A low cost ,flexible and secure system is proposed
