Deception and Full Disclosure


Open and honest as possible 1. Do not conduct a study involving deception unless they have determined that the use of deceptive techniques is justified by the studies significant and that nondeceptive techniques are not feasible 2. Do not deceive about research that will cause physical pain 3. Explain that deception is in integral feature of the design.

Anonymity and Confidentiality


Protect the privacy of our research participants Data should be collected anonymously and identified by code numbers or fictitious names Data must be kept in a secured place, kept confidential, and used only for purposes explained to the subject Not for gossip Identifiable details are to be disguised

Animal Welfare
Acquire, care for, use, and dispose of animals in compliance with law and professional standards Ensure appropriate consideration for their comfort, health, and humane treatment Received instruction in the care, maintance, and handling of the species Minimize discomfort, illness, and pain.

Use a procedure in subjecting animals to pain, stress, or deprivation only when an alternative procedure is unavailable, and the goal is justified Psychologists perform surgical procedures under appropriate anesthesia and follow techniques to avoid infection and minimize pain during and after surgery When it is appropriate the animals life be terminated, proceed rapidly with an effort to minimize pain in accordance w/procedure.

Fraud In Science
Fabrication of data Scientific reporting to keep fraud in check 1. Peer review 2. Replication 3. Academic promotion

Plagarism
Represent someone elses ideas, words, or written work as your own. Borrowing ideas w/o giving proper credit May occur in oversights

Tips to avoid plagirism


Take notes, include complete citation of source, authors name, etc. Identify information that are not your own Be careful w/paraphrasing Include a complete list of reference at the end, if in doubt when a citation is necessary cite the source anyway

Why is it risky to ask friends to participate in your research?


It can dissolve friendship Friends might not be completely ignorant about the purpose of an experiment They might feel obliged to participate
