How civil engineering lost the battle over the last two decades is a story of how bricks and

mortar lost their glamour to clicks the IT boom, fuelled by a growing army of footsoldiers in computer science and electronics reduced civil engineering to an old economy discipline.

All IITs taken together graduate barely 500-600 civil engineering students and estimates are that not more than a total of 10,000 civil engineers are created in India per year

Industry experts estimate that India faces a shortage of over 70,000 civil engineers each year. Not surprising, when you have just one in ten IIT students opting for the civil engineering discipline and only 200 of the 1700 engineering colleges approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) offer the course.

The Indian Civil Service serves as the backbone of India and carries great respect and responsibilities.
The Civil Services Examination is a challenge and thousands of candidates appear in it every year.

The examination consists of two parts: the Preliminary Examination (objective type), which is a qualifying examination, and a Main Examination consisting of written examination and finally the Interview. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds the Preliminary Examination in May/June and the Main Examination is held in October/November.

Engineering courses are available at two levels. There are the degree and postgraduate degree courses offered by the engineering colleges and Institutes of Technology (IITs), and, the diploma courses available at polytechnics. There is also the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), which enables working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor's engineering degree through distance education

Selection to the postgraduate courses (M.Tech) in different universities is through an 'All India Combined Entrance Exam' conducted by JNU, New Delhi and to IIT's through 'GATE' in Two year/4 semester M.Tech courses and through JEE in five year integrated M.Tech courses.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

WHY GATE EXAM? Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other Government scholarships/assistantships in engineering colleges/institutes is open to those Only who qualify in GATE examination.

Indian Engineering Services (ES) are the Technical Services that meet the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India. the extent of tasks and functions managed by the public sector this extends to a fairly broad segment of the economy covering the Railroads, Military, Public works, Power, Telecommunications, etc. Large number of people take these exams competing for limited seats. Some seats are Reserved in India for the underprivileged sections of society.

A combined competitive examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC); for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services (IES). The test is conducted in May or June every year at Various centres across India

Recruitment to Group - A Services / Posts and Group - B Services / Posts are made under the following categories of Engineering: CATEGORY I - Civil Engineering CATEGORY II - Mechanical Engineering CATEGORY III - Electrical Engineering CATEGORY IV - Electronics & Telecommunication

About Examination The Exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) in the month of may/june India wide. There are objective as well as subjective papers. One paper for GS (General Studies) is part of the assessment system apart from the engineering subject of the candidate.
