Kirtland, Ohio

First Gathering place Built their first temple About 20,000 people gathered there Driven out by mobs

Missouri

Five settlements started in Western Missouri Mob violence became harsh Governor Boggs issued an extermination order ordering the Mormons to leave Missouri Joseph Smith was imprisoned in Liberty Jail

Nauvoo, Illinois

Once was a swamp- but the Mormons drained it, built houses, and planted farms Nauvoo was the largest city in Illinois Peace for 8 years Mobs started to attack Mormons again because of the destruction of a printing press

Carthage Illinois

Joseph and his brother were killed in Carthage, Illinois by a mob Brigham Young became the leader of the Mormons and directed them to leave Nauvoo

Moving West

Different groups left Nauvoo during the winter, spring, and summer of 1846. They traveled across Iowa and made a settlement in Winter Quarters The weather was terrible and many died there

Some Mormon Pioneers decided to travel by boat They went all the way around South America, to Hawaii, and finally California

The Mormon Battalion

While the pioneers were moving to West, the United States was at war with Mexico Some Mormons decided to fight for the United States They were called the Mormon Battalion They never fought but some stayed in California and mined gold

The Advance Pioneer Company Coming to Utah

On July 22, 1847 the first Mormon pioneers came to Utah They shouted Hurrah for Israel! when they saw the valley Two days later the rest of the company arrived They had traveled 1000 miles
