Biodiversity

Living things are also known as organisms. Many kinds of living organisms are known as the diversity of life or biodiversity. All living organisms can eat, grow, move, excrete, breathe, respond and reproduce.

A place where plants and animals live is called a habitat. The sorting of things into groups is known as classification. Living organisms are classified into main groups animals and plants.

Mammals are warm-blooded animals whose bodies are covered with hair or fur. Their eggs are fertilised internally and their young develop inside the female body. Mammals give birth to live young.

Their young feed on milk from the mothers mammary glands. Mammals breathe with their lungs.

Reptiles

Many reptiles live on land. All reptiles have hard dry scales to protect their bodies. They breathe with the lungs and are cold blooded animals. Reptile eggs are fertilised inside the female body.

The eggs have tough, leathery shells to prevent them from drying out.

Birds

Birds are the only animals with feathers. They have wings and beaks but nit all of them can fly. They breathe with their lungs. They are warm-blooded animals.

This mean that their body temperature remains constant and does not change with the environment. Their eggs have hard shells and are laid in their nests.

Amphibians

Amphibians are cold-blooded animals that can live both on land and water. Most amphibian adults live on land. They return to the water only to lay eggs.

The young amphibians live in water and breathe through their gills. The adults breathe with their lungs when on land and through their skin when in water. The adults have loose and moist skin.

Fish

hard and slimy scales for protection. 2. They have fins and tails to swim. 3. They dissolved oxygen in the water trough their gills.

Most of them lay eggs that are fertilised outside their bodies. Fish are cold-blooded.
