Introduction

he most important thing in an

automobile is the suspension systems. Without a suspension system in our vehicle, it would be a very uncomfortable ride for the driver and fellow passengers because of which engineers discovered the suspension system and shock absorbers. Originally it was only pneumatics and hydraulics. But now with more development of ideas and research, our group has prepared the magnetic suspension which 6/3/12

Introduction(cont)
The

magnetic suspensions are the cheapest substitute to oil and air which prove maintenance too high. The magnetic suspension would work only on two magnets in one suspension which would be placed facing same poles that repel each other forming an air cushion giving a comfortable ride.

Drawbacks in existing suspension

Air

suspension requires an air compressor at all times to maintain constant pressure in the suspension chamber. Hydraulic suspension requires clean viscous oil so that it can resist compression. There is also a problem of leakages of oil from the oil seals. Electronic air suspension requires constant supply of current to keep the activity on.

About Magnetic Suspension

Magnets

have the property of both attracting as well as repelling. We have used the property of repelling in our project. The suspension would look similar to the telescopic shock absorber. The only change that is being made is, instead of using pistons to compress and expand, we use two magnets facing the same poles. When two magnets face the same pole they repel each other.

Construction
The

construction of the magnetic suspension is similar to the telescopic shock absorbers. The pistons will be replaced by two opposing magnets. There would be one cylindrical tube in which one magnet would be placed at the bottom. The other magnet would be at the bottom of a telescopic rod that has a top that connects to the chassis. Between the top of the telescopic rod and the tube, a coil spring would be fixed. The tube will be made of alloy material.

Working
The

two repelling magnets enclosed in cylindrical tube opposes each other causing a magnetic field. The spring helps hold the tube and the telescopic rod. When load is applied, the telescopic rod is pushed downwards. As the magnet on the top is pushed downwards by the rod, the magnet at the bottom repels it and pushes it back upwards.

Working (Cont.)
This

forms a cushioning effect. The spring controls the expansion stage and vibrations. The spring also prevents collision of the 2 magnets in case of loss of power of magnets.

Applications
It

can be used in light automobiles. It can be used in 2 wheelers in the form rear mono suspension. In four wheelers, it can be used in the same manner as the modern ones. A major application of these suspension could be in bi-cycles.

6/3/12

Supremacy
The

major dominance of the magnetic suspension over other suspension systems is that it does not have leakage problems. There is no need to provide any compressors, electric connections, sensors or wires. It is a very sophisticated construction. Maintenance would be easier. Easily available materials.

6/3/12

Conclusion
This

could be the revolutionary change in the automobile industry. In such a booming industry where there is a discovery in every second, the magnetic suspension would just sneak in. The magnetic suspension would bring more comfort and satisfaction to the passengers. The ride would become more comfortable because of the smooth functioning of the suspension.
