What is Behavior Modification Theory?

first proposed by B.F Skinner in 1938, is based in the behavior occurs because of its consequences changing the consequences, reinforces or rewards, then, can change behavior

 consequences of behavior can either be positive reinforcer, giving something that wanted, or punishment, giving something that is not wanted or taking away something that is wanted (Hergehahn, 1994)

 although both positive reinforcers and punishment will shape behavior, Skinner believed that positive rewards should be used positive rewards strengthen behavior, but punishment does not necessarily eliminate it (Hergehahn, 1994)

 not only does the type of reinforcement shape behavior, but the behavior is more powerful than one that is delayed

when the reinforcement is positive, even a small reward given right away is more effective than a large one that is delayed (Abrahams, Emmons, & Linnans, 1997)

 behavior also does not entail reasoning, thought, knowledge but only external immediate rewards (Butler, 1997) this theory also does not provide client with information and skills or reasons so that they may change behavior themselves, there is the risk that this types of interventions are directly manipulating behavior (Kothari, 1999)

 to address the clients concern, obtaining an informed consent from the client prior to intervention is a must(Kothari, 1999) by doing so, the client is making a decision to engage in an intervention designed to change his or her behavior

CONCLUSION
because the strength of the reward is such a powerful determinant of behavior, having the client the reward (or punishment) also diminishes the risk of behavior manipulation (Kothari, 1999)
