Round Up

Monsanto's top retail product Round Up, a broad-spectrum herbicide.

Millions of pounds of Round Up are used every 7/6/12 year on gardens, lawns

Super Weeds

7/6/12

Monsanto's RoundupReady and Bt technologies lead to resistant weeds and insects that can make farming harder and reduce sustainability.

Beginning around 2000, weeds growing in Roundup Ready crops began to develop resistance to Roundup (glyphosate), the Monsanto herbicide that Roundup Ready crops are genetically engineered to tolerate. By 2011, eight agriculturally important weeds in the U.S. had developed glyphosate resistance associated with Roundup 7/6/12 Ready crops

Glyphosate-resistant weeds now infest millions of acres of U.S. croplandand this area has been growing rapidly over the past several years. Countries where Roundup Ready crops were more recently introduced are now beginning to see similar growth in resistant weeds.

These "superweeds" are causing huge problems for U.S. farmers, especially in the Southeast (but also spreading in the Midwest), where some of these weeds cannot be effectively or economically controlled. The impact on cotton production has led one scientist to compare a glyphosate 7/6/12

Why is this problem growing so fast? Because the Roundup Ready system encourages unprecedented reliance on a single herbicidewhich, as biologists know, is likely to make resistance problems more severe. Pest resistance is not a new problem, but Roundup Ready technology has made it worse than 7/6/12 before.

Health Problems

Round Up has been linked to numerous environmental and human health problems, including: Increased risks of the cancer Non-Hodgkins lymphoma Miscarriages Attention deficit disorder Reduced production of sex hormones

Monsanto

Monsanto is deeply entrenched with the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmacia Corporation was created in April 2000 through the merger of Pharmacia & Upjohn with Monsanto Company and its G.D. Searle unit After merging with Pharmacia & Upjohn, Monsanto handed over its flagship anti-arthritic drug Celebrex 7/6/12

One of Monsantos longtime star performers is their herbicide RoundUp. Its sold worldwide as weedkiller Round Up long used the slogans, It's Safer than Mowing"; "Biodegradable," and Environmentally Friendly. But scientific research has proven Monsantos marketing tactics to be less than an accurate portrayal of their

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is the third most commonly-reported cause of pesticide illness among agricultural workers in California. Glyphosate is the most commonly reported cause of pesticide illness among landscape maintenance workers in California. The surfactant ingredient in Roundup is more acutely toxic than 7/6/12

Most glyphosate-based herbicides are formulated with one or more surfactants. The surfactant in a herbicide works in the same way as the surfactant in your shampoo it makes the active ingredients work harder. In a herbicide the surfactant spreads the solution across the leaf, 7/6/12 penetrates the leaf and thus

The study of Ontario farming populations showed that exposure to glyphosate nearly doubled the risk of late miscarriages. It also found that the ethoxylated surfactant used in the Roundup formulation studied doubled the toxic effect of the glyphosate.

In 2002, French scientists found that Roundup activates one of the key stages of cellular division that can potentially lead to cancer. There is also research that shows that even brief exposure to glyphosate causes liver damage in rats. The research indicated that glyphosate acted in synergy with the surfactant used in Roundup to increase damage to the 7/6/12 liver

In an extensive study on the effects of pesticides on these non-target organisms in a natural setting, the researchers found that Roundup caused a 70 per cent decline in amphibian biodiversity and an 86 per cent decline in the total mass of tadpoles. Leopard frog tadpoles and gray tree frog tadpoles were nearly eliminated by exposure to the 7/6/12 herbicide.

Because of its widespread use, Roundup can be found in most waterways as a result of runoff and it has the potential also to contaminate surface waters. In fact, in one 1998 survey Roundup was reported to have been found in surface water in the Netherlands, in wells sited under electrical substations that had been treated 7/6/12 with glyphosate, in seven US wells

The choice buy a weedkiller and kill a weed seems simple on the surface, but when you buy a product such as Roundup you are buying into a whole host of other issues worldwide pesticide contamination, loss of biodiversity, increases in ill health and the support of GM crops you may never 7/6/12 had dreamed of.

Short-term exposure to glyphosate can cause breathing difficulties, loss of muscle control and convulsions. Farm workers exposed even to small amounts of Roundup by rubbing an eye, for example report swelling of the eye, eyelid or face, a rapid heartbeat and elevated blood pressure, all as a result of the residues transferred from the hands 7/6/12 after touching leaky equipment.

Glyphosate is acutely toxic to fish and birds and can kill beneficial insects and soil organisms that maintain ecological balance. Laboratory studies have identified adverse effects of glyphosatecontaining products in all standard categories of toxicological testing. Glyphosate residues in soil can persist over a year. Glyphosate 7/6/12 residues has been found in

Monsanto, manufacturer of Roundup, agreed with the New York Attorney General's office to discontinue their use of the terms "biodegradable" and "environmentally friendly" in ads promoting glyphosate-based products, including Roundup.

Glyphosate(,G) the active ingredient in Round Up, is the most commonly-reported cause of pesticide illness among landscape maintenance workers in California. The surfactant ingredient in Roundup Poly Ethoxy tallow Amine(POEA) is more acutely toxic than glyphosate itself, and the combination of the two is even more toxic.
