I've been told that my war experiences, ...view moreAfter an adventurous life in the Marine Corps, the GI Bill helped me earn a BA in Creative Writing (specializing in fiction) from the University of Arizona. I've been told that my war experiences, along with growing up in a poor ethnic neighborhood in Tucson, have made my books seem authentic. However, I deliberately don't write about myself: I imagine a cast of conflicting characters, put them in problematic and dangerous situations, and they write their exciting stories for me. I let them fight it out; and, practicality often trumps institutionalized correctness in their sometimes deadly brawls.view less
